Improving Schools, Developing Inclusion (Paperback, New Ed): Mel Ainscow, Tony Booth, Alan Dyson Improving Schools, Developing Inclusion (Paperback, New Ed)
Mel Ainscow, Tony Booth, Alan Dyson
R1,441 Discovery Miles 14 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite the efforts that have been made to bring about improvements in schools, some children and young people remain marginal by current arrangements. The development of more inclusive schools remains one of the biggest challenges facing education systems throughout the world. However, inclusion remains a complex and controversial issue, and the development of inclusive practices in schools is not well understood.
Improving Schools, Developing Inclusion uses evidence from in-depth research to provide new insights as to how this important agenda should be addressed. The authors challenge many existing assumptions about school improvement and educational reform, and propose that the development of inclusive practices will only be achieved by engaging in dialogue about the deeply held beliefs of teachers and policy makers. In so doing, they provide a new way of thinking about how schools can be made more inclusive.
The approach to inclusive development recommended in the book has major implications for policy and practice in the field. It looks at:
- Implications for the work of school leaders
- How staff teams work can together in order to address barriers to participation and learning
- How schools can collect and use evidence in order to strengthen their practices
- The sorts of critical and alternative perspectives to which schools need access
- The implications for relationships between schools, local authorities and researchers
At a time when policy-makers and practitioners are searching for more effective ways of responding to student diversity, this challenging book offers powerful messages as to what needs to be done to move schools in a more inclusivedirection.

Developing Equitable Education Systems (Hardcover): Mel Ainscow, Alan Dyson, Sue Goldrick, Mel West Developing Equitable Education Systems (Hardcover)
Mel Ainscow, Alan Dyson, Sue Goldrick, Mel West
R4,580 Discovery Miles 45 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite consistent improvements in the school systems of over recent years, there are still too many children who miss out. It is not only children from disadvantaged backgrounds attending hard-pressed urban schools that the system is failing - even in the most successful schools there are often groups of learners whose experience of schooling is less than equitable. As a result of their close involvement with a group of schools serving a predominantly working-class community over five years, the authors of this book offer an analysis of how marginalisation within schools can arise, and provide suggestions for responding to this crucial policy agenda. They propose a teacher-led inquiry strategy that has proved to be effective in moving forward thinking and practice within individual schools. However, their research has shown that using the same strategy for system change is problematic within a policy context that emphasises competition and choice. Learning from this experience, the authors analyse the factors that inhibit the collaborative approach needed to reduce inequities that exist between the schools, in order to formulate proposals that can move the system as a whole towards more equitable provision. In Developing Equitable Education Systems, the authors focus on the way teachers' sense of 'fairness' can become a powerful starting point, helping individual schools to inquire into and develop their own practice and provision. They provide practical suggestions for practitioners about ways of working that can create a greater sense of equity within particular school contexts, and highlight the barriers to a wider strategy for reducing system inequities that reside in local and national policies and traditions. At a time when government policies in many countries move to extend the diversity of educational provision - for example, through the introduction of charter schools in the USA, free schools in Sweden and academies in England - the authors also include a set of recommendations that offer a timely warning against the fragmentation of school systems in the misguided belief that competition benefits all children. They suggest that a more sensible approach would be to avoid situations whereby the improvement of one school leads to a decline in the resources available to, and subsequently the performance of, others.

Education and Poverty in Affluent Countries (Paperback): Carlo Raffo, Alan Dyson, Helen Gunter, Dave Hall, Lisa Jones, Afroditi... Education and Poverty in Affluent Countries (Paperback)
Carlo Raffo, Alan Dyson, Helen Gunter, Dave Hall, Lisa Jones, …
R1,446 Discovery Miles 14 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For the first time, researchers, policymakers and practitioners across the world will have access to a comprehensive mapping of research evidence and policy strategies about education and poverty in affluent countries. Although there is widespread agreement that poverty and poor educational outcomes are related, there are competing explanations as to why that should be the case. This is a major problem for practitioners, policy makers and researchers who are looking for pointers to action, or straightforward ways of understanding an issue that troubles education systems across the world. This unique book brings scholarship and analysis from some of the most influential researchers and writers on education and poverty within one text. The authors provide a synthesising framework that will help researchers and policy makers to examine future educational policy in a holistic and comprehensive fashion.

Colleen Cummings, Alan Dyson, Liz Todd
R4,283 Discovery Miles 42 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book, for the first time ever, critically examines the role of full service and extended schools. The authors draw on their extensive international evaluations of this radical new phenomenon to ask:

  • What do extended or full service schools hope to achieve, and why should services based on schools be any more effective than services operating from other community bases?
  • What pattern of services and activities is most effective?
  • What does extended schooling mean for children and families who are not highly disadvantaged, or for schools outside the most disadvantaged areas?
  • How can schools lead extended services at the same time as doing their ?day job? of teaching children?
  • Why should schools be concerned with family and community issues?
  • Beyond the advocacy of ?extended provision?, what real evidence is there that schools of this kind make a difference, and how can school leaders evaluate the impact of their work?

This book will be of interest to anyone involved in extended and full service school provision, as a practitioner, policy-maker, or researcher.

Theorising Special Education (Paperback, New): Catherine Clark, Alan Dyson, Alan Millward Theorising Special Education (Paperback, New)
Catherine Clark, Alan Dyson, Alan Millward
R1,498 Discovery Miles 14 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The field of special needs education is well established, and although it continues to develop in exciting and controversial ways, involving some of education's leading thinkers, many people feel it is lacking a coherent theoretical analysis of its own.
Students and practitioners, looking for some solid theory to reinforce their own study or practice, commonly have to 'borrow' from other disciplines, such as psychology and sociology, since there has been no attempt to provide a theoretical foundation for the special needs community. This book does exactly that, bringing together contributions from key names in the field from UK and beyond.
The book will establish itself as an essential text for students and teachers, as well as all those involved in special needs across the social sciences.

Education, Disadvantage and Place - Making the Local Matter (Paperback): Kirstin Kerr, Alan Dyson, Carlo Raffo Education, Disadvantage and Place - Making the Local Matter (Paperback)
Kirstin Kerr, Alan Dyson, Carlo Raffo
R830 Discovery Miles 8 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Challenging current thinking, this important book is the first to focus on the role of area-based initiatives in this struggle. It brings together a wide range of evidence to review the effectiveness of past initiatives, identify promising recent developments, and outline innovative ways forward for the future. It shows how local policymakers and practitioners can actively respond to the complexities of place and is aimed at all those actively seeking to tackle disadvantage, including policymakers, practitioners, academics and students, across education and the social sciences.

Alan Dyson, Alan Millward
R1,238 Discovery Miles 12 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Shortlisted for the Standing Conference on Studies in Education (SCSE) book awards for 2001 In Schools and Special Needs, the authors provide a critical perspective on the dominant `inclusion' model of special needs education, in terms of implementation in schools and effectiveness of pupil learning outcomes. They take issue with the major advocates of the inclusion model and argue that a different way of understanding special educational needs in mainstream schools is both possible and necessary. The authors, who are eminent in the special needs field, use up-to-date material to develop a new model for special- education in schools.
